Bullet tuna are small fast schooling tunas. Rapid cooling is important if fish are retained.

Habitat and season

Warm coastal and offshore water.

Months are a broad guide, not a current catch forecast. Region, water temperature and local closures can change the season.

Metal jigs search different depths for passing predatory fish. Open casting space and a planned landing point are essential.

A float shows bites while suspending the bait at a chosen depth. Adjusting the float stop changes the feeding layer.

Detailed Japanese species notes

丸みのある紡錘形で胸びれが短く、頭の後ろの有鱗域が広めです。ヒラソウダと比べ、胸びれの長さと有鱗域の幅を合わせて観察します。

ヒスタミンができやすい赤身魚。直ちに冷却し、鮮度低下が疑われる魚は食べない。家庭向けには加熱料理を紹介しますが、加熱でヒスタミンは消えません。
