上あごが長い槍状に伸びる。背びれ前方は高いが、バショウカジキのような大きな帆状ではない。腹びれを持つ。腹びれのないメカジキとは別の仲間。

吻・大きな針・高張力ラインによる事故に注意。リーダーを手へ巻かず、取り込みはクルーに任せる。食用は適切に処理・保冷された流通魚を利用。妊娠中の方は厚労省の魚介類の水銀に関する注意を確認する。
