第二背びれと尻びれ、尾へ続く小離鰭が黄色い。成魚では第二背びれ・尻びれが鎌のように長く伸びる。幼魚は他のマグロと似るため、ひれの形・胸びれの長さなどを合わせて確認。

強い走りで転倒しない姿勢を取る。ラインを握らず船長の指示で取り込む。持ち帰りは速やかに冷却し、ヒスタミンは加熱しても除けないことに注意。クロマグロの混獲時は当該ルールを確認する。
