シブダイと呼ばれる魚のうち、体の後ろ側に白い斑点を持つ種類。フエフキダイの仲間とは別で、磯の餌釣りで狙われる。呼び名だけでは混同するため斑点の位置と色も見たい。
口の歯と背びれの棘を避ける。南方の似たフエダイ類には食中毒原因魚もいるため、同定できない魚は食べない。
