内湾の幼魚から岩礁の成魚まで出会うフエダイ。体側の一本の帯が後方で太くなるのが目印だが、大きな個体では模様が薄れる。小型魚を単に「フエダイの子」と片付けず見分けたい。
歯・背びれの棘に注意。若魚の特徴だけで大型個体の食用可否を判断しない。
