Red cornetfish

Red cornetfish has an exceptionally long tubular snout and a thin filament extending from the tail. Its length overstates the amount of edible flesh.

Habitat and season

Warm offshore reefs and adjacent sandy bottom.

Months are a broad guide, not a current catch forecast. Region, water temperature and local closures can change the season.

A live baitfish swims on the rig to attract larger predators. The bait must remain lively and the rig must suit the water depth and local rules.

Metal jigs are worked below a boat through the depth occupied by predators.

Detailed Japanese species notes

長い筒状の口と細長い赤い体、尾から伸びる糸状の部分が特徴。見た目の全長ほど可食部は多くありませんが、白身は椀物や蒸し物に向きます。

長い魚体と尾の突起を振り回さないよう注意。甲板での取り込みと針外しは周囲に声を掛け、船長の手順に従います。
