Kyusen is a wrasse whose colour differs between sexes. It commonly takes small baits intended for other shore fish.

Habitat and season

Mixed sand, rocks and weed in shallow water.

Months are a broad guide, not a current catch forecast. Region, water temperature and local closures can change the season.

A light sinker and short baited trace cover nearby sand for whiting and gobies. Long casts are not required to learn where bites occur.

Short hook branches above a sinker keep bait near bottom while separating it from the seabed.

Detailed Japanese species notes

体側に細い赤褐色の縦線が並ぶ。大型の雄は緑がかり胸びれ後方に黒斑。小型の個体は赤褐色で雌雄の判断は色だけでは難しい。

小骨とひれの棘に注意。持ち帰る魚は砂や汚れを落として冷却し、小さな個体を取りすぎないようにします。
