細かい茶色から橙色の斑点をまとった大型のハタ。ヤイトハタに似るが、斑点の色と体の模様を併せて確認したい。幼魚が河口近くにいることもあり、小さなハタに見えても強い力で根へ戻る。
鋭いえら・棘に注意。南方の大型ハタ類は採捕地のシガテラ情報も確認し、食用の安全が不明な釣魚は調理しない。
