Bluegill are deep-bodied sunfish with a dark opercular flap. They are non-native in Japan.

Detailed Japanese species notes

えらぶたの後端に黒〜濃紺の耳状の部分がある。体高が高く横に平たく、体側に暗い縦帯が現れる。口は小さく、背びれの前半には硬い棘が並ぶ。

背びれ・尻びれの棘に注意。特定外来生物なので生きたまま持ち帰らない。再放流禁止や回収箱の有無は現地確認。食用は適切に処理・保冷し、淡水魚を生食しない。
