口が大きく、閉じた上あごの後端が目の後方まで達する。 体側中央に暗い帯が現れ、体色は水域によって変わる。 コクチバスは口の大きさや体側模様が異なる。小型個体を色だけで決めない。
特定外来生物。許可なく生きたまま運搬・飼育・別水域へ放流しない。釣った場所での再放流も自治体・管理者の規則を確認。食用にする場合は現地で適切に処理・保冷し、生食しない。
