Omorig — squid jig on a separate leader

A sinker controls depth while a squid jig trails on a longer leader. The pause after a lift lets the jig settle and gives squid time to take it. Ask whether casting an omorig rig is permitted on your boat.
Tackle and preparation
An omorig spinning rod, braid, abrasion-resistant leader, a purpose-made connector, the prescribed sinker and a squid jig. Follow the skipper’s weight and leader-length requirements.
On the water
- Confirm the target depth, sinker weight and permitted casting direction.
- Keep the long leader and hook crown clear of people, then lower or cast as instructed.
- Reach the target depth, recover slack and use short lifts followed by pauses.
- Watch for a lift or loading of the tip; set the hooks with a short controlled lift.
- Retrieve under steady tension and secure the sinker before handling the jig.
