体高が高く、成魚の額は張り出して頭部が大きい。尾の付け根に硬いぜいごがある。カスミアジの青いひれ・多数の青点と比較。幼魚のメッキは複数種を含む。

大きな針と強いラインを使う。投げる前に後方確認し、ラインを手へ巻かない。食用は地域・個体によるシガテラの問題があるため自己判断で持ち帰らず、本ページでは家庭料理を案内しない。
