銀色の細身の体、小さな口、短い背びれ。成熟雄は尻びれが長く、体側に青緑と赤みが現れる。ハスほど口が大きく裂けない。

小川でも増水や急な深みに注意し、子供は大人と岸から釣る。川魚の生食は避ける。釣った魚を他の水域へ移さず、遊漁規則を確認する。
