Flame snapper

Flame snapper are deep-water fish with a remarkably long upper tail lobe. Called onaga or akamachi locally, they are not the rocky-shore fish called onaga-gure. Boat anglers use deep-water rigs and follow the skipper’s drop sequence.

Habitat and season

Deep offshore slopes around the Izu, Ogasawara and Nansei islands.

長く伸びる尾が印象的な赤い深場のフエダイ。オナガ、沖縄ではアカマチの名で知られる。岸のフカセ釣りでいうオナガグレとは別の魚で、深い根を狙う船釣りの対象になる。

重いオモリと多針仕掛けに注意し、投入・巻き上げは船長の合図を優先。深場魚を安易に海面へ放して生存すると考えない。
