Japanese codling has a chin barbel and a soft body tapering towards the tail. Marine donko is a regional name and should not be confused with freshwater fish sharing that name.
Habitat and season

顎に一本のひげがあり、体の後半が細くなる褐色の魚。地方名のドンコは淡水魚にも使うため、釣れた海域と体形を合わせて確認します。
針を飲んだ魚の口へ指を入れず、プライヤーを使用。傷みやすい身は保冷し、内臓の生食は案内しません。
