Bigfin reef squid

Broad fins run along much of the mantle. Squid may follow an egi before taking it during a pause or fall.

Habitat and season

Coastal weed beds, rocky margins and bays.

An egi is a shrimp-shaped squid jig with a crown of barbless hooks. Squid often take it while it sinks after a lift.

A weighted egi is worked vertically from a drifting boat. Watch the rod tip for tiny changes as the jig pauses.
