Tachiuo tenya — baited jig for hairtail
タチウオテンヤ
Tenya is a weighted head with a large hook, usually baited with a whole sardine. Boat anglers work it through the depth called by the skipper.
Tackle and preparation
Use a tenya rod and the exact head weight, line size and leader arrangement required by the boat. A Japanese weight number is not a gram measurement.
On the water
- Secure the bait straight against the head.
- Drop to the instructed depth, recover slack and alternate short lifts with pauses.
- Strike when a positive bite develops, then keep steady tension. Keep fingers away from the teeth.
