Kokanee move in schools through the water column. Repeat the depth of successful bites and avoid hard strikes that tear the soft mouth. Lakes have separate seasons and bait rules.
Tackle and preparation
Locally approved kokanee rigs and sinkers, a forgiving rod, a depth-counter reel if suitable, a net and a lifejacket. Ask the boat operator about permitted hook numbers and bait.
On the water
- Confirm the fishing permit, opening times and limits.
- Lower the untangled rig to the advised depth.
- Use small lifts and pauses, recording the depth when fish bite.
- Wind smoothly without a hard strike or sudden slack.
- Net the fish and return before wind or waves become unsafe.
