Use a short rig from stable footing and separate a bite from a snag before pulling harder.
Safe access comes first
Crevices in a permitted pier edge are different from gaps between wave-breaking blocks. Do not climb down between concrete blocks or follow a map pin into a restricted breakwater. Choose a position with a clear route back and no wave wash.
Present a small bait
Attach a compact bait to a weighted single-hook rig. Lower it into an opening and keep light contact. Large loose bait may be stripped without a clear take and can catch on the surrounding structure.
Bite or snag?
A fish may give repeated movement, while a snag remains fixed. Lift smoothly when the fish loads the rod, then keep it away from cover. If the rig sticks, change the angle gently; do not pull with your face in the line of the hook.
Limit what you keep
Rockfish can be vulnerable to repeated harvest at a small spot. Follow local size and retention rules, release small fish carefully where permitted and move on rather than removing every fish from one opening. Use pliers around fin spines.
Before your first trip
- Confirm access, any booking or permit, and the route home.
- Bring a life jacket, pliers, spare tackle, drinking water and a rubbish bag.
- For boat fishing, ask for the operator’s required rig and whether rental tackle is available.
